After Surgery

Follow up after the surgery includes an evaluation of wound healing at 7 to 14 days and a semen analysis at 6 to 10 weeks.  Afterwards semen analyses are then obtained every 6 weeks for approximately 4 to 6 months, or until the semen analysis stabilizes.  If the semen quality is less than expected due to early scarring, anti-inflammatory medications are often used to minimize scarring.

  • Prescriptions for pain medication will be provided
  • Apply an ice pack to the scrotal area for the first 48 hours
  • An athletic supporter or tight supportive underwear is recommended for 7 to 10 days
  • Patients can shower after 48 hours.  Baths should be avoided for 10 days
  • Over the counter pain relievers may also be used to alleviate any discomfort following surgery
  • Sexual activity can resume 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure
  • No strenuous work may be resumed after 2 weeks
  • It may take 3 to 4 weeks for the sutures to completely dissolve
  • All bandages may be removed after 48 hours
  • A semen analysis will be ordered 6 to 10 weeks following surgery

Swelling and bruising are to be expected in the scrotal area following the vasectomy reversal procedure.  It is normal for the swelling and bruising to extend to the penis.  While it is normal to have a moderate amount of scrotal swelling after the surgery, please contact your surgeon if you experience severe swelling after surgery.
